BOBEV's Papers and Articles:

Follow the Files, Dimensions Implementation Discussion (PPT) - A presentation prepared for the September 2005 Serena eXchange Conference. Its more than a Dimensions implementation discussion.  It covers a number of lessons learned that can be applied to ANY SCM implementation.

Criteria for Integrated SCM Systems(PPT) - A presentation prepared for the 2003 Association for Configuration and Data  Management, and Software Technology Conferences. Will also be presented at the BCS CMSG CM conference in Cambridge, UK. Material is drawn from Bob's Advanced SCM Seminar.

Effective Software Configuration Management - An article published in the Feb. 1998 CrossTalk Journal (when Bob Ventimiglia was employed by Lockheed Martin Aeronautics) where it has been in the top ten in accesses on the their web page. This article outlines some of the concepts for Effective SCM that we have been developing and represents where we were with our approach in Feb. 1998.

In the Real World: Improved Software Development Takes Off - An article by Bob Ventimiglia published in August 1999 in Industrial Computing Magazine when he was employed by Lockheed Martin Aeronautics.

Effective Software Configuration Management a C130J Software Success Story - May 6, 1999; Software Technology Conference presentation by Bob Ventimiglia

Common SCM Patterns in Software Development Projects (PDF Version)- May, 2001 Software Technology Conference presentation by Bob Ventimiglia, Matt Gelbwaks, and Benjamin Kelleher. A presentation that was never made in person due to Pretzel Logic's demise.

The Future SCM Practitioner - A paper presented at the 1996 Software Technology Conference.

The Commando Returns: by by David Thielen and Larry Constantine, March 1999 Software Development Magazine, Management Forum section. After seven years, the original commando coder returns to set the record straight. It’s true—as projects get larger and more complex, good practices, design, and planning are the best approaches to project management. (as is effective SCM!). {Note: that this article is no longer available in the online edition of the magazine}

Books of Interest:

"Principles of Configuration Management", M. A. Daniels, 1985, Advanced Applications Consultants, Inc., ISBN 0-934-321-08-6. Easily the best (and shortest) book on CM yet written - and it pre-dates all of them. Many, if not all, of the concepts/principles of Effective SCM are derived from our having read this book in 1987! We had forgotten about until it was found in a footlocker in 2000! Can be ordered using the above link.

"Configuration Management, the missing link in web engineering", Susan Dart, 2000, Artech House, ISBN 1-58053-098-2, well written book covering basic SCM and how it applies to web based development. The list of 16 signs of an SCM problem on page 87 alone is worth the price of the book, as is the description of Susan's 22 steps for implementing a solid SCM tool solution. If these steps are followed it almost guarantees that the tool will not be shelf ware.

"Configuration Management, The Changing Image", Marion Kelly, 1998. McGraw Hill, London, ISBN 0077079779. Easily the best SCM book on the market today - until we remembered "Principles of Configuration Management"... Marion has almost completely captured the essence of Effective SCM. There is little in this book that we disagree with. Problem is it does not seem to be available in the US. We have been unable to obtain it from Amazon or Barnes & Noble. It is available directly from McGraw Hill London, or from The PC BookShops, London.

"AntiPatterns and Patterns in Software Configuration Management", Brown, McCormick and Thomas, 1999. John Wiley & Sons, ISBN 0-471-32929-0. As they say on page 4, "A Pattern is a form of solution intended to address a problem. The problem for Pattern readers has always been to identify when and how a Pattern should be used." In other words Patterns are a formal way of documenting lessons learned. This is the first book written applying Pattern methods to SCM. It is well written, easy to understand, and more importantly, reinforces and support the concepts of Effective SCM. As stated on the back over, "It contains 8 SCM AntiPatterns, 4 Management and Process AntiPatterns, and 3 Process Patterns that address process, people, and tool issues." The problem is the patterns/AntiPatterns are all relatively high level and do not address everyday execution issues.
