We have struggled for quite some time to be able to put a list of worthwhile links together. We will in no way attempt to get as extensive a list as the CM Yellow Pages provides or Brad Appleton's pages provide. However as we encounter web pages that might be useful to an Effective SCM practitioner we will include it here. Each link we provide will contain a description of the link and why we think it is helpful. Eventually we'll organize these links into functional and logical groupings and use bookmarks to allow you to jump to them more easily - but its just not your lucky day today!

CM Crossroads: Another important link for those who don't want to have to many. Contains online forums covering everything from general CM to specific tools. Is rapidly replacing CM Today as the CM place to be "seen". A must see site.

CM Today: The single most important link you should know about. It summarizes ongoing news about the SCM industry and is now the home to the CM Yellow Pages (see below), the CMTALK email exploder, and a CM JOB's web site.  This site has become the one to remember for the SCM industry!

CM Yellow Pages: It was late 1994 when Andre Van der Hoek asked those lurking on the comp.software.config-mgmt Usenet news group if a CM Yellow Pages web page would be useful. Fortunately we were amongst those who thought the web might be useful and said - go for it!  Who woulda thunk then that the CM Yellow Pages would become the premier web page for Software Configuration Management! Well its now lost its position, because it was absorbed by the CM Today web page when Andre decided to work for a living and left the University of Colorado! Not that he really went to work, he's teaching at the Univ. of Ca., Irvine.

Brad Appleton's Page: One of the reasons it has taken so long for BOBEV to create a web page! This one is hard to compete with and we won't! Brad is an interesting guy. He must never sleep, even though he has told us that he does. At least every other night! Well his site contains more than 4,000 interesting links on many software related subjects. Fortunately for us, Brad has an interest in SCM, Software, and SCM Patterns. Being opinionated, we have had our disagreements, which doesn't diminish one bit the effort Brad has put into his site and to the contribution he has made to the SCM and Software communities. Thanks Brad - keep it up!

Unified Configuration Management (UCM) Central: A relative newcomer to the CM stage that seeks to foster discussion and thought within the CM community by hosting brief "coffee break" articles. The March issue contains the editors interesting discussion of eXtreme Programming and SCM which I heartily agree with and which reinforces the need for "Effective SCM" types of implementations for XP development efforts. Thanks Niall!

Software Technology Support Center: A US Air Force supported site with lots of good, free information. Publishers of the excellent CrossTalk Journal which is dedicated to distributing software best practice information to the software development community at large.

SPMN: Software Program Managers Network. Contains a good, basic, but somewhat classical "Little Book of Software Configuration Management", "The Little Book of Bad Excuses" and other other excellent program management information.

Software Quality - Scott Duncan: A very well written, process oriented web page.

Abelia Corporation: Software Process Consulting. Their President, Lewis Gray, is an excellent speaker with a good insight into what it takes to accomplish software process improvements. See the free publications on their home page. We've also included some of their papers in our Great Links page.

Welcome to Software Methods and Tools: Title says it all!

INCOSE Tools Database Working Group: International Council on System Engineering. System Engineering best practices and lessons learned.

RISKS-LIST: RISKS-FORUM Digest: The digest of the Usenet comp.risks news group. A good read if you like monitoring interesting risk information.

Construx Software: A web site containing quite a bit of Software Development Resources information and free tools for software estimation, document templates, checklists and other useful tools for solid software development discipline. Construx was founded by Steve McConnell an influential person in the software development industry and author of books such as "Code Complete", "After the Gold Rush: Creating a True Profession of Software Engineering", and "Rapid Development".

Trends in Software Engineering Process Management (TSEPM): Edited by Scott Fingerhut. TSEPM focuses on software project management, process improvement and risk analysis.

Software Engineering Body of Knowledge: Sponsored by ACM and IEEE-CS this effort is part of a larger effort focused on defining the Software Engineering Profession. As you may already know, in the state of Texas, you cannot call yourself an Engineer without meeting certification requirements and passing one or more tests. The SWEBOK is part of a national effort which will lead to a national definition of what constitutes a "Professional Software Engineer"! Note too that one of the side effects of having a definition of "Professional Engineer is that we would be able to be sued for malpractice if we didn't follow "commonly accepted software engineering principles". Until the Texas law the US lacked any Software Engineering "Expert Witnesses" that would be allowed to testify in a court of law. Hey, we don't know if this is good or bad, just thought it was kinda interesting!

Free Electronic Engineer's Toolbox: Contains a list of software engineering internet resources including FAQ's, papers, hot lists, potential shareware, etc.

Tool Feature Lists:
The question always seems to come up, "Does anyone have a list of features I should use when selecting SCM tools?". So that I, and others, can save some time typing, I'm making the feature list used in my Advanced SCM Seminar available here. I will also include links and or copies of material made available by others, including links to suppliers publications and white papers.

Advanced SCM Seminar Workshop Feature List:
This file is used during the tool selection workshop of the Advanced SCM Seminar. Tools A, B, C, D do not represent any real tools. They are the names of the tools that the attendees must select from during the the tool selection workshop.
